Murder, Manuscripts, and Mayhem: A Killer Retreat You Can’t Escape

Written by Katie Barr

A deliciously twisty thriller with bite, brains, and just the right amount of blood. Even if the final twist doesn’t quite match the exquisite build-up, the ride is more than worth it. If Agatha Christie had a cocktail with Gone Girl, this might be the love child. I’ll be RSVPing to whatever Ande Pliego writes next.

There is something undeniably thrilling about reading a murder mystery set among writers. Who better to lot the perfect crime – or unravel one – than people who literally do it for a living? Ande Pliego’s You are Fatally Invited leans into this premise with gleeful abandon, crafting a high-stakes, ink-drenched whodunit that’s equal parts cunning, claustrophobic, and wickedly fun.

The set up is irresistible: Six thriller authors are invited to an exclusive retreat at a remote estate – no phone service, no escape. What could possibly go wrong? Well, for starters: murder. Add to that a storm, a suspicious host, and more buried secrets than those discussed in a true crime podcast, and you have the cocktail of chaos shaken, not stirred.

From page one, Pliego pulls no punches. The pace is tight and relentless, propelling you forward with short, sharp chapters and cliffhangers that practically beg for ‘just one more’. But what really sets this novel apart is its use of multiple unreliable narrators – each even more suspicious, self-serving, and darkly amusing than the last. Trust no-one, not even yourself.

“The dialogue crackles with dry wit, and the banter between characters feels as deadly as the murder itself.”

Pliego’s writing is razor-sharp – she knows exactly when to twist the knife and when to let the tension simmer. The dialogue crackles with dry wit, and the banter between characters feels as deadly as the murder itself. There are subtle jabs at the publishing industry, genre clichés, and the fragile egos that often lurk beneath literary success. If you’ve ever imagined your favourite thriller authors stuck in a house playing psychological chess while someone bleeds out in the drawing room – this is your book.

The mystery itself is layered and well-paced, with red herrings lurking in every corner. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, Pliego yanks the rug out with a sly wink. That said, the big twist near the end, while serviceable, doesn’t quite deliver the jaw drop moment I was hoping for. It felt just a touch too neat, a bit too scripted for a story that had otherwise thrived on ambiguity and subtext. But to be fair, the build-up was so deliciously tense that even a slightly undercooked finale couldn’t ruin the dish.

What truly makes this book shine is Pliego’s voice – confident, cheeky, and unafraid to colour outside the lines. This isn’t just a thriller. It’s a knowing, self-aware love letter to the genre, dressed up as a murder mystery but slyly poking fun at the very tropes it indulges in. It’s the kind of book that winks at you while leading you down a dark hallway with a bloody pen.

The remote setting, complete with stormy weather, locked doors, and plenty of eerie creeks, is deliciously gothic.

And the atmosphere! The remote setting, complete with stormy weather, locked doors, and plenty of eerie creeks, is deliciously gothic. You can practically hear the typewriters clicking and the wine glasses clinking while something sinister slithers just out of frame.

If I had to nitpick, I’d say a couple of the character arcs could have used a bit more depth – but honestly, part of the fun lies in how over the top some of them are. These are not people who you root for. They are people you watch with morbid fascination, wondering who’ll be next to crack under the pressure. Or get cracked over the head.

Overall, You are Fatally Invited is a sly, suspenseful read that doesn’t just entertain – it invites you into a wicked little game and dares you to guess the rules. It’s like a literary escape room where the clues are scattered in the prose and everyone is lying through their teeth.
