God Bless Us, Every One … If We Survive: A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong Preview

Written by Katie Barr

Who says Christmas comedy has an expiration date? While the decorations may be back in the loft and the mince pies a distant memory, A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong proves that festive chaos is funny at any time of year. Dickens classic may be rooted in Christmas Eve, but when the Cornley Amateur Drama Society gets involved, the season is irrelevant. Disorder, disaster, and delight are guaranteed long after the tinsel has come down.

In this riotous new production from Mischief Theatre, Cornley attempt to stage a ‘traditional’ telling of A Christmas Carol. Their intentions are noble. Their execution is not. From the moment the audience arrives, it’s clear that trouble is brewing. The set isn’t quite finished, the cast seems oddly on edge, and behind the scenes tensions are threatening to spill onto the stage. What should be a comforting classic quickly becomes a high-speed descent into theatrical chaos.

As Ebenezer Scrooge’s journey from miser to miracle-maker begins, so too does Cornley’s increasingly desperate struggle to hold the show together. Props malfunction, scenery collapses, actors forget lines or disappear entirely, and supernatural effects take on a life of their own. Ghosts miss entrances, costume changes go awry, and moments of heartfelt redemption are undercut by sheer physical mayhem. Each attempt to fix a problem only creates three more, sending the production spiralling further off the rails.

What sets A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong apart is the craftsmanship behind the carnage. Every disaster is meticulously planned, every pratfall precisely timed. Mischief Theatre’s trademark blend of physical comedy, visual gags and escalating chaos ensures that the laughs come thick and fast, whether it’s a collapsing set piece or a performer valiantly trying to continue as everything around them disintegrates. The result is comedy that feels spontaneous and anarchic.

The familiarity of Dickens’ story makes the madness even more satisfying. Audiences know how A Christmas Carol is supposed to unfold, which makes it all the funnier when it doesn’t. Iconic moments involving the Ghosts are gleefully derailed, while Scrooge’s moral awakening competes with Cornley’s ongoing battle over casting, cues, and credibility. Even when Christmas itself feels far away, the story’s themes of generosity and transformation still shine through the chaos to give the comedy an unexpected warmth.

This outing delivers everything you’d hope for. Bigger stunts, bolder mishaps, and a cast pushed to their comic limits. This is an ideal introduction to Mischief’s world, no prior knowledge required, just a willingness to laugh as live theatre collapses in the most spectacular ways imaginable. It’s a celebration of things not going to plan. It reveals the unpredictability of live performance and the joy of watching actors battle bravely on as disaster strikes from all sides. Whether it is December or the middle of summer, that kind of chaos never goes out of season.

Christmas may have passed, but the comedy is very much alive. Make sure to grab your tickets here to see a show that will drag you out of your January blues. Not from Nottingham? Check here to see if your City still has tickets.
