A Dinner Party, a Ghost Story, and the Hour That Won’t Pass

Written by Katie Barr

Set over the course of one tense, sleepless night, 2:22 – A Ghost Story unfolds inside a London home where something doesn’t feel quite right. What begins as an ordinary evening between two couples gradually spirals into a gripping psychological mystery, where belief and scepticism collide—and neither side emerges unscathed.

“It’s not just a passing worry—it’s a certainty that gnaws at her, shaping her every thought and unsettling her sense of safety.”

At the centre of the story is Jenny who is convinced her home is haunted after hearing things go bump in the night. While Sam remains firmly grounded in logic, dismissing anything supernatural as nonsense, Jenny is convinced that something strange is afoot. Every night, without fail, she claims to hear strange sounds at exactly 2:22am. It’s not just a passing worry—it’s a certainty that gnaws at her, shaping her every thought and unsettling her sense of safety.

Determined to prove her point—or perhaps to reassure herself—Jenny invites their friends Lauren and Ben over for dinner. Lauren, an old friend, arrives with her partner Ben, whose open-mindedness toward the paranormal contrasts sharply with Sam’s rigid disbelief. What begins as polite conversation soon turns into a charged debate about ghosts, the afterlife, and whether unexplained experiences can ever truly be rationalised.

As the evening progresses, the atmosphere thickens. Small, seemingly insignificant details begin to take on greater meaning: a baby monitor crackling with interference, unexplained movements, and the persistent sense that something unseen is watching. Jenny grows more certain that the house holds a presence, while Sam becomes increasingly frustrated, determined to expose what he sees as fear-fuelled imagination. Ben, however, introduces a different perspective. Rather than dismissing Jenny outright, he encourages the group to consider the possibility that not everything can be easily explained. Lauren, caught somewhere between scepticism and curiosity, finds herself drawn into the tension, questioning her own assumptions as the night deepens.

“The question of whether the house is haunted becomes intertwined with deeper emotional truths, blurring the line between psychological unease and genuine supernatural threat.”

The four agree to stay awake together until 2:22am—the moment Jenny insists the disturbances always occur. What follows is a slow, deliberate build of suspense. Conversations turn more personal, secrets begin to surface, and cracks appear in each relationship. The question of whether the house is haunted becomes intertwined with deeper emotional truths, blurring the line between psychological unease and genuine supernatural threat.

“Every creak, every flicker of light, every silence feels loaded with meaning.”

As the clock ticks closer to 2:22, the sense of anticipation becomes almost unbearable. Every creak, every flicker of light, every silence feels loaded with meaning. The audience, like the characters, is left questioning what is real and what might be imagined. Is Jenny experiencing something truly otherworldly, or is fear distorting her perception? And if Sam is so certain there’s nothing there—why does the tension affect him too? When the moment finally arrives, the play delivers its most unsettling twist. Without giving too much away, the revelation challenges both the characters’ beliefs and the audience’s expectations. It’s not just about whether ghosts exist, but about how people process grief, fear, and the unknown.

The brilliance of 2:22 – A Ghost Story lies in its ambiguity. It refuses to offer easy answers, instead leaving viewers to decide for themselves what they believe. The play becomes less about proving the existence of the supernatural and more about exploring how belief shapes reality—and how the things we fear most often come from within.

“With a cast bringing layered, emotionally charged performances, the story feels both intimate and unsettlingly real.”

Performed during its 2026 tour, including at the Theatre Royal Nottingham, the production continues to captivate audiences with its clever writing, sharp dialogue, and mounting tension. With a cast bringing layered, emotionally charged performances, the story feels both intimate and unsettlingly real. Ultimately, this is a play that lingers long after the final moment. Whether you leave convinced of ghosts or firmly rooted in scepticism, one question remains impossible to shake: what would you believe if you heard something every night at exactly 2:22?
