An Epic Love Story in the Shadow of War: Miss Saigon Comes to Nottingham
Written by Katie Barr
Few musicals arrive with the legacy, scale and emotional impact of Miss Saigon. Epic in scope and intimate at heart, Boublil and Schönberg’s landmark show returns in a spectacular new UK and Ireland tour, visiting Theatre Royal Nottingham from 24th March to 4th April 2026.
A reimagining of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, this sweeping musical transports audiences to the final days of the Vietnam War, where a young Vietnamese woman and an American GI fall in love under impossible circumstances. What unfolds is a story of passion, sacrifice and survival that has captivated over 38 million people worldwide. Set against the chaos of the fall of Saigon, Miss Saigon introduces us to 17-year-old Kim, forced to work in a bar run by the opportunistic Engineer. There she meets Chris, an American soldier, and the pair begin a romance that burns brightly amid the uncertainty of war. But when Saigon falls, they are torn apart – setting Kim on a three year journey that spans continents and tests the limits of hope, resilience and maternal devotion.
It’s a narrative that blends grand spectacle with devastating intimacy, asking questions about responsibility, cultural conflict and the human cost of war – themes that resonate today as they did at the show’s 1989 premiere. Created by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, the duo behind Les Misérables, Miss Saigon quickly became one of the most successful musicals in theatre history. Its original Broadway production ran for nearly ten years and over 4,000 performances, while the 25th Anniversary Gala introduced the story to a new generation on screen. The soaring score features iconic numbers such as ‘The Heat Is On in Saigon’, ‘The Movie in My Mind’ and the show-stopping ‘The American Dream’ – songs that combine operatic intensity with contemporary musical theatre power.

This brand-new tour is overseen by legendary producer Cameron Mackintosh and directed by Jean-Pierre van Der Spuy, promising a visually breathtaking and emotionally charged revival. Leading the cast is Seann Miley Moore reprising their acclaimed performance as the Engineer, a role that balances sharp-edged comedy with heartbreaking vulnerability. Making her professional debut as Kim is Julianne Pundit, while Jack Kane takes on the role of Chris. They are joined by Dom Hartley-Harris as John and Emily Langham as Ellen, alongside a full company bringing this epic story to life. With its cinematic design, powerful choreography and that famous helicopter moment, this new production aims to honour the musical’s legacy while introducing its story to audiences experiencing it for the first time.
More than three decades after its debut, Miss Saigon remains a theatrical event. Its scale is immense, yet at its core is a deeply personal story of a young woman fighting for her child’s future. In an era still shaped by global conflict and displacement, its themes feel urgently relevant. For Nottingham audiences, this is an opportunity to witness one of musical theatre’s most ambitious productions in a fresh new staging. A show that promises spectacle, emotion, and unforgettable music in equal measure.
