Bend, Snap and a Standing Ovation: Legally Blonde Lights Up Nottingham
Written by Katie Barr
Some musicals entertain you for a couple of hours. Legally Blonde grabs you by the hand, covers you in pink glitter and sends you out into the Nottingham night believing you can probably conquer the world.
From the second the curtain rose at the Theatre Royal last night, this touring production exploded with energy. Not in a forced, over-polished way either — it felt genuinely alive. The audience knew exactly what kind of night they were in for almost immediately, and by the time the opening number finished, the atmosphere inside the theatre had shifted completely. People weren’t just watching the show; they were fully in it.
“Davies … delivers a performance bursting with charisma, charm and surprising emotional depth.”
At the centre of it all is Amber Davies as Elle Woods, who delivers a performance bursting with charisma, charm and surprising emotional depth. Elle is one of those characters that only works if the audience roots for her completely, and Davies makes that effortless. She nails the comedy, the iconic one-liners and the endless high-energy choreography, but what really makes her performance stand out is the vulnerability underneath it all. As Elle slowly realises she doesn’t need to change herself to succeed, the show becomes far more than a bubblegum comedy.
And yes — it is still gloriously funny.
The audience last night laughed constantly, particularly during Paulette’s scenes, which nearly stole the show altogether. Every joke landed. Every ridiculous Harvard stereotype was milked for maximum effect. Even moments that could feel overly familiar somehow felt fresh again because of the cast’s sheer commitment to the chaos of it all. Musically, the production barely pauses to breathe. The ensemble work is phenomenal, with choreography so relentlessly sharp that it almost becomes stressful to watch. “Whipped Into Shape” was a genuine showstopper — the kind of number where you stop wondering how performers are still singing while skipping and simply accept that musical theatre performers may not actually be human.

Visually, it is exactly what Legally Blonde should be: bold, bright and unapologetically theatrical. The set moves seamlessly between sunny California and intimidating Harvard halls, while the costumes somehow manage to make every scene look even bigger than the last. The production embraces the campness of the musical without ever turning it into parody, which is exactly why it works so well.
“Legally Blonde … leans fully into its joy, and the result is two and a half hours of pure escapism that leaves the entire theatre buzzing.
What surprised me most, though, was how uplifting the entire evening felt. Beneath all the sequins, sorority chants and perfectly timed comic moments is a story about proving people wrong — including yourself. That message never feels heavy-handed, but it lands all the same. By the finale, the audience were on their feet almost instantly. There’s something incredibly satisfying about a musical that knows precisely what it is and executes it this confidently. Legally Blonde doesn’t try to reinvent itself into something darker or more serious. Instead, it leans fully into its joy, and the result is two and a half hours of pure escapism that leaves the entire theatre buzzing.
In a world that can feel relentlessly serious, Legally Blonde is a reminder that theatre can still simply be fun — and last night at Nottingham Theatre Royal, it was impossible not to fall completely in love with it.
If you’re in Nottingham, Legally Blonde is a must see and you can find your tickets here! But do not fear, this fabulous production is touring around the UK, check if tickets are available near you!
